PRESIDENT BANDA CONGRATULATES BONETTI, CHIPOLOPOLO

LUSAKA, Saturday, June 4, 2011 -Zambia's President, Rupiah Banda has congratulated Zambia soccer coach Dario Bonetti and his squad for today’s 3-0 victory over Mozambique in the 2012 Africa Cup Group C qualifier, saying it is a befitting send-off to the late midfield legend Willie Phiri who died two days ago.

The President said he was impressed with the way the squad acquitted itself in the match played at Chingola’s Nchanga Stadium where the late Phiri spent his entire club career both as player and coach until a road traffic accident confined him to a wheelchair almost two decades ago.

“Please, accept my hearty congratulations, Mr Bonetti, and convey the same to your great team of talented and dedicated players for, once again, making us proud. What you have done is an honour to our late legend Willie Phiri who used Nchanga Stadium to bring smiles to thousands of Zambians,” President Banda said.

The Head of State said he will continue supporting the Chipolopolo both materially and morally as it was his desire to ensure that the Chipolopolo remained on course for qualification to the 2012 Africa Cup and 2014 World Cup.

The President urged Bonetti and his squad to remain focussed and not allow themselves to be distracted by anything as the entire nation had massive faith in their ability to achieve even greater results.

President Banda further cautioned the squad against complacency ahead of the remaining qualifiers against the Comoros and Libya, as that might militate against the gains already posted.

This is according to a statement from the state house public relations unit.
