British High Commissioner urges registered voters to verify their details

British High Commissioner, Carolyn Davidson, has urged registered voters to go to their respective Polling Stations and verify their details in the Voters Register.

Speaking when she visited some polling stations in Munali area in Lusaka today, Ms Davidson said:

“It is important that all registered voters go to the Polling Stations at which they registered and check that their details are correct in the Register of Voters. By verifying the details, voters will avoid the problem of possibly being denied their right to vote on the voting day just because there is a problem with their credentials.”

Ms Davidson stressed that it is important for people to exercise their right to vote in this year’s tripartite elections and help strengthen democracy in Zambia by taking advantage of the Inspection of the Register of Voters period from 30 May to 12 June 2011 as set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

The High Commissioner also said the 2011 election presents an opportunity for Zambia to burnish its reputation of holding transparent, free and fair elections. She said the UK and other partners were working with ECZ to ensure they were adequately prepared to conduct a transparent election in which all stakeholders had confidence.

LUSAKA, Saturday, June 4, 2011 -Zambia's President, Rupiah Banda has congratulated Zambia soccer coach Dario Bonetti and his squad for today’s 3-0 victory over Mozambique in the 2012 Africa Cup Group C qualifier, saying it is a befitting send-off to the late midfield legend Willie Phiri who died two days ago.

The President said he was impressed with the way the squad acquitted itself in the match played at Chingola’s Nchanga Stadium where the late Phiri spent his entire club career both as player and coach until a road traffic accident confined him to a wheelchair almost two decades ago.

“Please, accept my hearty congratulations, Mr Bonetti, and convey the same to your great team of talented and dedicated players for, once again, making us proud. What you have done is an honour to our late legend Willie Phiri who used Nchanga Stadium to bring smiles to thousands of Zambians,” President Banda said.

The Head of State said he will continue supporting the Chipolopolo both materially and morally as it was his desire to ensure that the Chipolopolo remained on course for qualification to the 2012 Africa Cup and 2014 World Cup.

The President urged Bonetti and his squad to remain focussed and not allow themselves to be distracted by anything as the entire nation had massive faith in their ability to achieve even greater results.

President Banda further cautioned the squad against complacency ahead of the remaining qualifiers against the Comoros and Libya, as that might militate against the gains already posted.
