A new sports complex in Lusaka, Zambia’s Capital City, which is a pilot project of the International Olympic Committee-IOC-’s Sports for Hope Programme, has been opened.
Zambian President, Rupiah Banda commissioned the facility built at the cost of Sixteen-Million-Kwacha United States dollars with a call for the proper utilization of the facility, which is said to be the first of its kind in Africa.
The Olympic Youth Development Centre, which has been set up as a multi-purpose complex, including outdoor facilities for athletics, football, basketball, tennis, handball, volleyball and hockey, an indoor sports venue, a boxing hall, a gym, a number of classrooms and locker rooms is expected to benefit about ten-countries in Southern African region.
IOC President, Jacques Rogge also graced the occasion.
The Sports for Hope Programme aims to provide athletes, young people and communities in developing countries with better opportunities to practice sport and to be educated in the values of Olympism.
